Forestry is responsible for maintaining a healthy urban forest of over 24,000 trees. This is accomplished by developing and carrying out a seven-year trimming cycle (some varieties of trees and younger trees may need to be trimmed more frequently). Tree inspections are done on a regular basis to ensure that trees are safe and healthy. Removals are required when a tree's condition poses a hazard to life or property. On average, 3,500 trees are trimmed annually. The Forestry Group has been awarded Tree City USA the past 33 years and the Growth Award for 11 years.

Forestry also maintains and landscapes 120 acres of green space including Settlers' Park and the downtown historic district;  decorates the business district for festivals, parades, and the holiday season; and assists with snow and ice removal during the winter months.
