Background

The Village of Plainfield constructed and started operation of the water system in 1895. Since that time, the Village has been committed to providing high quality water service to our residents. In April of 2004, the community began receiving treated Lake Michigan water as our source supply. The Plainfield water system currently consists of one lake water pumping station, eight miles of water transmission main, one pressure station, five water towers, 3,600 fire hydrants, and over 225 miles of water distribution main. (Three groundwater wells remain on standby status to be utilized in the event of an emergency). Water samples are analyzed on a daily basis to ensure water quality. We provide drinking water to over 40,000 people in the Village and maintain sufficient water levels, in the towers, to provide fire protection for our residential, commercial, and industrial users.

Water Service & Billing

To begin or discontinue water service, please call (815) 439-4250 for service or a final meter reading. Residential scavenger service is provided by Village Ordinance and is billed with the monthly water bill. View water rates.

Water Meters & Water Mains

If you have a water meter leak or find a water main break, please report it to us as soon as possible.

We have service people that are on-call and ready to assist you, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please call (815) 436-3577 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. After hours and on weekends, please call (815) 436-2341 for assistance.

Keep Fire Hydrants Clear

If there is a fire hydrant in the parkway near your home, please be sure to keep the hydrant clear of snow and plantings to insure easy access for the Fire Department in the event that it is needed.

Water Use/Lawn Sprinkling Ordinance

The Village of Plainfield year round ordinance for outside water use follows:

  • Lawn sprinkling for even numbered addresses on even numbered calendar days is permitted between the hours of 6:00 am - 10:00 am and/or 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm.
  • Lawn sprinkling for odd numbered addresses on odd numbered calendar days is permitted between the hours of 6:00 am - 10:00 am and/or 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm.
  • Watering of gardens, trees, shrubs, and flowers (with a handheld hose or watering can) is permitted anytime.
  • If there are any questions concerning water restrictions, please call Public Works at (815) 436-3577.

Lead Line Inventory

The purpose of the lead line inventory is to require community water supplies to develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive water service line material inventory and replacement plan. A well-developed materials inventory allows communities to prioritize and strategize the replacement of known lead service lines within their water distribution system.

The Village of Plainfield is in the last stages of lead line replacement and anticipates that the remaining lead lines will be removed in the 26/27 budget year.

Lead & Copper Sampling

In 1991, the EPA published a regulation to control lead and copper in drinking water. This regulation is known as the Lead and Copper Rule (also referred to as the LCR).

The treatment technique for the rule requires systems to monitor drinking water at customer taps. If lead concentrations exceed an action level of 15 ppb or copper concentrations exceed an action level of 1.3 ppm in more than 10% of customer taps sampled, the system must undertake a number of additional actions to control corrosion.

If the action level for lead is exceeded, the system must also inform the public about steps they should take to protect their health and may have to replace lead service lines under their control.

The Village of Plainfield is currently under the 10% action level.
